Introduction: During the Fall Semester of 2004, a working group of Faculty and Staff from IT Services and Facilities & Campus Services began working on a project to identify and develop standards for "smart classrooms" at UAA. This project received funding from Vice Chancellor Ejigu and four classrooms were created to demonstrate the technology and to provide a preview of future smart classrooms.
In the Summer and Fall of 2006, eight additional Smart Classrooms were introduced through a fund-matching program with various departments on the UAA and KPC campuses. These classrooms incorporated improvements in both design and technology that were identified and decided upon during the demonstration period of the original four classrooms.
Efforts to deploy more Smart Classrooms across the campus continue.
About the Rooms:
Each classroom is equipped with a lectern, a multimedia projector, computer, DVD/VCR player, and document camera. All devices are controlled via a control panel mounted on the lectern. The lecterns also employ a SMART Tablet that acts as an interactive smart board. Finally, each classroom is set up as a wireless hotspot on UAA's network, allowing student and instructors to work wirelessly from mobile devices.
Because the equipment is always accessible, each lectern is monitored by a surveillance camera to ensure the security of the equipment.
