Tired of unwanted and obnoxious emails? Many students, faculty and staff at UAA are and they have asked for help with this ever-increasing problem over the past year. Help is now on the way!
After an extensive pilot test in spring semester, the anti-spam system from MailFrontier™ was selected for implementation at UAA this fall. The pilot test involved over 100 students, faculty and staff from our main campus and several community campuses. Results of the pilot test showed that spam is a huge problem at UAA and also that the MailFrontier™ system was highly effective in filtering unwanted messages.
Spam is a Huge Problem
The figure below shows email traffic for UAA’s Sentinel mail gateway for the period beginning August 17.

Spam and likely spam messages comprised over 65% of all daily inbound email during this period. Spam levels like this have been consistently seen since data collection was begun in April.
MailFrontier™ to the Rescue!
The MailFrontier™ system will launch on October 4th. UAA’s students, faculty and staff who receive email at their “@uaa.alaska.edu” email addresses will automatically be enrolled in the system. Users who wish to “opt-out” of the system will be able to do so quickly and easily.
How does MailFrontier™ Work?
MailFrontier™ scans all of your inbound email for electronic “signatures” associated with spam and places suspected spam into a Junk Box belonging to you.
Every week you will receive a message from the MailFrontier™ system showing all of the messages placed in your Junk Box during the past seven days. If you wish to view or “unjunk” any message in your Junk Box you can do so within this digest message with a single mouse click.
Messages placed in your Junk Box by MailFrontier™ that you don’t “unjunk” will remain for 30 days and then will be automatically deleted. You can view all of the messages in your Junk Box or make changes to your default settings by logging into to the MailFrontier™ system at http://aspam.uaa.alaska.edu with your UAA username and password. Here you can review your Junk Box, tailor MailFrontier™ to your personal needs and even view reports for spam activity at UAA.
