UAA's Efforts to Further Reduce Spam

In July, UAA/IT migrated the University’s anti-spam/anti-fraud service to next-generation technology provided by IronPort Systems which was recently acquired by Cisco Systems, Inc.  The new service has produced some spectacular improvements in reducing unwanted email across the entire University.  It has also given our staff the opportunity to further refine how the IronPort equipment is tailored to meet our unique needs.

For example, after installation in July our staff found that previously set up relationships between our messaging systems and those operated by UA’s Statewide organization were permitting spam coming into the Statewide system to be propagated into UAA’s messaging system.  UAA/IT staff, working with OIT staff, have since fixed this problem as well as dealing with other adjustments.

We would like to now implement a “spam hotline” that will allow UAA users to quickly get spam complaints directly to our Network/Systems Operation Center for resolution.  Beginning today, UAA users can forward unwanted email to antispam@uaa.alaska.edu where our staff will immediately take steps to research how such messages got into our systems and identify ways of blocking future unwanted messages.  We encourage all UAA users to help UAA/IT provide better services by letting us know when unwanted messages slip through.  If you have any questions concerning this, please contact the IT Call Center at 786-4646 or 877-633-3888.
