DHCP

In an ongoing effort to simplify and facilitate access to the UAA campus and Anchorage metropolitan area data networks, ITS has implemented a centrally managed, automated network configuration service. This service is based on DHCP.

  • Benefits
The new service greatly simplifies the configuration of a desktop computing system for access to the data network and Internet. With one simple setting, all relevant network configuration information can be automatically provided. For most people, this means there is no longer a need to call ITS to request an IP address or a DNS entry. For staff or faculty who use laptop computers or Smart Carts in multiple locations (e.g. office and classroom, or office and meeting room), it means no longer having to change configurations or addresses when changing location. For do it yourself information, see the DHCP setup instructions.
  • The Technical View
The DHCP service dynamically provides an IP address, IP subnet mask, IP gateway address, DNS server addresses, and a DNS name entry for stations connecting to the data network. We have also incorporated a central WINS service to simplify and facilitate Windows network connectivity.
