What is a mailing list?

A mailing list is an easy way to send E-mail messages to multiple addresses. Lists can be very helpful when sending announcements to a certain group of recipients. Through the UAA mailing list service, you can setup how your list sends to different addresses, choose who has privileges to send to your list, and who the recipients are.

What is the address of my mailing list?

The address for a mailing list follows the convention: listname@lists.uaa.alaska.edu

Use this address when sending out Email messages to your list.

How do I request a mailing list?

IT Services has setup a web-based request form. Use this form to fill out who will be the list administrator and the purpose for the list. http://technology.uaa.alaska.edu/computer/Email/mailserveRequestForm.cfm

What can I use my list for?

UAA mailing lists can be used to serve a variety of purposes. Although the lists need not have academic purpose, we ask that they be related to the university in some capacity.

Who can have a list?

All UAA staff and faculty can set up list accounts. Students with a department sponsor can also setup an account.

How can I make my list private?

All public UAA lists are shown on the directory page. http://lists.uaa.alaska.edu/mailman/listinfo

If you wish to have a private account not listed on this page, please make a note when applying for an account.

Click on the list you administer and type in your password. From your tools menu, you can manage list settings and subscribers.

Can I subscribe whoever I want?

As long as the terms and conditions agreed to when applying for an account are followed, anyone can be set up on your list. Keep in mind that unsolicited E-mail will not be allowed.

What are the default settings for a list?

Posting- Only those addresses set up as subscribers have the ability to post to the list. The administrator can also set up the list to require approval from the administrator before posting.

Receiving- Subscribers can be set to receive messages or not. Suspending mail delivery to an address still allows the subscriber to post if they choose.
