What is a mailing list? A mailing list is an easy way to send E-mail messages to multiple addresses. Lists can be very helpful when sending announcements to a certain group of recipients. Through the UAA mailing list service, you can setup how your list sends to different addresses, choose who has privileges to send to your list, and who the recipients are.
What is the address of my mailing list?
The address for a mailing list follows the convention: listname@lists.uaa.alaska.edu
Use this address when sending out Email messages to your list.
How do I request a mailing list?
IT Services has setup a web-based request form. Use this form to fill out who will be the list administrator and the purpose for the list. http://technology.uaa.alaska.edu/computer/Email/mailserveRequestForm.cfm
What can I use my list for?
UAA mailing lists can be used to serve a variety of purposes. Although the lists need not have academic purpose, we ask that they be related to the university in some capacity.
Who can have a list?
All UAA staff and faculty can set up list accounts. Students with a department sponsor can also setup an account.
How can I make my list private?

Who can send to my list?
From inside your administrator controls you can set different subscribers posting privileges.
How do I manage my list?
To access your administrative tools, go to the admin page: http://lists.uaa.alaska.edu/mailman/admin
Click on the list you administer and type in your password. From your tools menu, you can manage list settings and subscribers.
Can I subscribe whoever I want?
As long as the terms and conditions agreed to when applying for an account are followed, anyone can be set up on your list. Keep in mind that unsolicited E-mail will not be allowed.
What are the default settings for a list?
Posting- Only those addresses set up as subscribers have the ability to post to the list. The administrator can also set up the list to require approval from the administrator before posting.
Receiving- Subscribers can be set to receive messages or not. Suspending mail delivery to an address still allows the subscriber to post if they choose.
What are some of the common tasks when managing a list?
List administrators are in charge of adding subscribers to their lists, setting posting and receiving privileges to each subscriber, approving and reviewing pending posts.
How do I change my administrator password?
Under General Options, scroll to the bottom of the page to change your password information.

How do I add new subscribers?
Under Membership Management, scroll to the bottom of the page and enter email addresses under Mass Subscribe Members.
Note: Use only one address per line in the box.

How do I set my list so all posts have to be approved by the moderator?
Under Privacy Options, change the line 'Must posts be approved be an administrator' to Yes.

How do I allow anyone to subscribe themselves?
Go to 'Privacy Options' and select 'confirm' under 'What steps are required for subscription'. This means all that is required for subscription is the requestees confirmation
Users can subscribe themselves to a list by going to: http://lists.uaa.alaska.edu/mailman/listinfo/list name
From this page, users can subscribe to the list and also view the subscriber list.
Do subscribers of my list have passwords? How do they manage them? What if they forget their password?
By default, subscribers are emailed a password upon subscription. Also, at the first of every month, they are sent reminders of their password and a link for changing their personal information.
How do I change individual subscriber options, such as E-mail formatting?
From the Membership Management page, the administrator can choose various options for each user with the Membership list grid. You can choose options such as who receives mail and if they prefer text formatted or web formatted messages. Use the key below the grid for more options.
