This article explains how to setup UAA email on all versions of Netscape 6 on Windows.
Need to print this article? Click for the printer-friendly Adobe Acrobat version (requires a program that can read pdf files like Adobe Acrobat Reader)
1) On the lower left hand side of the browser window, select the 'Mail' icon. It is circled here in red, and looks like an envelope.

2) A pop up window will appear. Select the default setting, ISP or Email provider and click Next.

3) On this next step, please enter your name (this will be displayed in the From: field in outgoing messages) and your email address. When you?ve entered these two things, click Next.

4) This next screen should have Incoming Server and Outgoing (SMTP) Server on it, as well as a dropdown menu called Server Type.

Netscape Messenger is capable of using two different protocols for checking e-mail: the Post Office Protocol (POP3) and the Internet Mail Access Protocol (IMAP). See Choosing IMAP or POP3 at the end of this document to decide which is right for you. (We recommend using POP3)
5) Enter mail.uaa.alaska.edu for the incoming server and smtp.uaa.alaska.edu for the outgoing (SMTP) Server.
6) Select IMAP or POP3 where it says 'Server Type'. If you're not sure which to choose, see Choosing between POP3 and IMAP at the end of this article
7) Enter your username where it says 'User Name', then click Next.

8) Type in what you would like this email service to be called, then click Finish.
SMTP Authentication
In order to send correctly you'll also need to enable SMTP authentication:
1) Tasks > Mail & Newsgroups
2) Edit > Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings
3) Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) in the list
4) Check the box next to Use name and password
5) In the User Name field, type your username
6) Click the OK button
Choosing between POP3 or IMAP
POP3 (Post Office Protocol) downloads all of your new e-mail messages from the server to your computer, and store them locally. When the download is complete, the messages are deleted off the server by default. If you choose to leave the messages on the server you will need to make sure that you don't exceed your disk quota.
POP3 is reccommended if you're a heavy email user and will have more mail than you're specific quota (student 10MB, staff/faculty 20MB). It's also recommended if you only read your email from one computer.
IMAP (Internet Mail Access Protocol) leaves your messages on the server. You use an email program to 'view' your messages on the server. When using IMAP you need to make sure that you do not exceed your disk quota.
This service is excellent if you need access to all of your mail messages from multiple computers.
