This document is intended to answer frequently asked questions (FAQ's) about Email service at the University of Alaska Anchorage. It aims to answer some common technical questions, explain some common problems, and especially point you toward more detailed information.

How do I get an Email account

UAA Email accounts are created automatically for students registered for at least 1 credit. Allow 2 business days after registration for account availability. 10MB of space available. To lookup your Email account, use the USERNAME LOOKUP form on the left of this page.

What's my email address?

<username>@uaa.alaska.edu
Your default email address is your username with @uaa.alaska.edu appended to it. IT Services customers have the option of choosing up to three email aliases, which are usernames of your choice, like john.doe@uaa.alaska.edu. To create an alias, go to Directory Update at http://username.uaa.alaska.edu

What's my password?

Your default UAA password is lower case uaa followed by your first, middle and last name initials in upper case, then the last four digits of your UAID# (also called student or employee id number). If  this does not work, please contact the Call Center for further assistance.

How do I change my password?

ITS recommends you change your password to a secure one of your own choosing. Login to your account at http://username.uaa.alaska.edu to change your password.

How do I use my e-mail?

If you are a student at UAA the easiest and most convenient way to access your email is through Webmail. You can use Webmail from any computer connected to the Internet that has a web browser. Windows - Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox  Macintosh - Safari

The AOL web browser will not work with UAA email!

Logon to your UAA email at http://webmail.uaa.alaska.edu

If you are UAA staff or faculty and are using Exchange services with your UAA email you can access your Exchange mailbox at http://webaccess.uaa.alaska.edu  Please see the KB article

It's also possible to setup an e-mail program like Outlook or Outlook Express to access your UAA e-mail. Go here for more information.

When does my account expire?

Student accounts expire 1 semester after the last day of attendance. Staff, Faculty and other employee accounts expire 1 month after last day of employment or upon the supervisor's request.

What does "over quota" mean?

Email storage space is not unlimited. If you receive an over quota message, it means that you've exceeded your available space on the email server. You'll need to login to Webmail and delete some messages (you must also empty trash from the 'folders' view) or download them to your personal computer.

Quota limits are as follows:
Students have 10Mb

Staff and Faculty have 20Mb

Mailing Lists at UAA - Where can I find information?

A mailing list is method of distributing e-mails to a large number of people through a single e-mail address rather than dealing with a collection of e-mail addresses in your e-mail program. A mailing list is managed on a server with commands that range from adding and removing addresses to setting posting privileges. You must be staff, faculty, or a sponsored student worker to request a mailing list. http://technology.uaa.alaska.edu/kb/Computer/Email/MailingListFAQ.cfm

Can I change the way my name appears on outgoing e-mails?

Yes, all this and more can be conveniently managed from the Directory Update.

Can I send attachments?
What is the size limit on attachments?

This will get the information out faster. Note that the recipients email system will also have size limits and rules that affect attachments.

I have my address book in my desktop e-mail program. Can I import it into Webmail?

There is currently no way to import your personal address book into your Webmail account.

Can I forward my e-mail somewhere else?

Sure, you can configure your forwarding address through the Directory Update.
