Mac OS8.5-9.2.2 Dial-up Instructions

This document explains how to configure a Macintosh running MacOS 8.5 – 9.2.2 to access the Internet through the University of Alaska dialups. Once a dialup networking connection has been established, network applications like Netscape, Internet Explorer, Telnet and FTP can be used to access the Internet.

Modem Control Panel

The first step is to choose and setup the type of modem installed.

1. From the Apple Menu, select Control Panels, and Modem.

2. At the Modem control panel.

  1. For Connect via: select Modem Port unless the modem really is connected to the printer port.
  2. For Modem select the type of modem installed (usually already listed)

3. Click on the square in the upper left corner of the Modem control panel to close it.

 

 

4. Click on Save.

 


TCP/IP Control Panel

The second step is to make sure your TCP/IP Control Panel is setup for a dialup connection.

 

1. From Apple Menu, Control Panels, select TCP/IP.

3. For Connect via: select PPP.

4. For Configure: select Using PPP Server.

5. Click Options at the bottom right and select the Protocol tab.

6. Make sure the top three boxes are checked and click OK.

7. Click on the square in the upper-left corner of the TCP/IP control panel.

 

8. Click on Save.

 

Apple Remote Access

The third step is to setup Remote Access with your username, password and number to dial.

 

1. From the Apple Menu, select Control Panels, Remote Access.

2. In the Remote Access control panel.

a. Select Registered User

b. Enter your username (ends with @ua)

c. Enter your password. You can

choose to have this saved. Otherwise, you’ll have to enter it each time your connect.

 

d. Enter your local dialup number. NOTE: If you dial '9' to access an outside line, enter a '9' and a comma before the number (example: 9,2748282)

6. Back at the main menu click on the small square in the upper left-hand corner to exit and save.

1. Once you have found your web browser (or other network application) double-click on it to start your dialup connection.
