VPN connection

Requirements

VPN connections are only available to staff and faculty.

  • You must be running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows 2003.
  • Prior to using the VPN service, you must request your UAA computer account be activated for VPN by contacting the Call Center. Contact information is at the bottom of this document

Overview

A VPN (virtual private network) connection allows you to securely connect to resources that would otherwise be unreachable from a different network.

When you are using a VPN connection, it will appear to systems on campus that you are also on campus - you will have a UAA IP address instead of the one you would normally receive from GCI, ACS or whichever non-UAA Internet Service Provider you are using. This allows you to connect to UAA network resources that you would not be able to from home, securely connecting thru the perimeter of the UAA network.

Potential Uses

  • Using Outlook to connect to the IT Services Exchange server
  • Using keyed applications controlled by keys.alaska.edu
  • Accessing UAA network file shares, including those on the Active Directory domain
  • Accessing any web site or resource that requires a UA connection
